Keywords: Gonial angle, Mandible, Northern zone
Introduction:The mandible is the largest and strongest bone of the face and articulates with skull at
temporomandibular joint. It consists of horseshoe shaped body and a pair of rami. The body of mandible meets the ramus on each side at the angle of mandible.
Objective: The objective of the study was to measure the anthropometric evaluation of gonial angle of adult
human dry mandible in northern zone of Bangladesh.
Methods: This observational study was carried out in the Department of Anatomy, Rangpur Medical College,
Rangpur during the period to July 2017 to June 2018. The study was conducted on 200 adult dry human
mandibles which did not show any fracture, pathology or wear and tear irrespective of age and sex. All
measurements of gonial angle of mandible were done on adult human dry mandibles by mandibulometer.
Mandibular index was calculated for each mandible. The data obtained were statistically analysed by SPSS
version
Result: Regarding gonial angle, the result was found in present study, mean ±SD 116.56°±10.2, The gonial
angle in mandibular bones were measured as the angle formed by the base of mandible and the posterior border of the ramus by the scale of protractor of mandible, which is placed over the angle of mandible in such a way
that the base of protractor coincides with the base of mandible.
Conclusion: The present study would provide valuable information about the parameters of the mandibles of
the Bangladeshi population which would help the anatomists, forensic experts, orthodontist and anthropologists.
